Mondriaan's Victory Boogie Woogie: his last work under the microscope.
The research focused on one of the most important art works of the 20th century: Victory Boogie Woogie, the last work of Piet Mondriaan (1942-1944).
Initial inspection of the artwork by researchers from the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and the Cultural Heritage Agency.
The aim was to trace the history of development of this painting through historical and technical research. As Mondriaan did not finish the work, it is possible to look quite a way back in time using microscopy.
The evolution this painting underwent tells much about Mondriaan's thinking and work process. In addition, the restoration history was investigated and a simulation of the layer structure was made using the Geographical Information System CARTA. All the analytical and photographic information is compiled in this system.
